Nombre

After almost 9 years, I figured it was time for a change. Names are funny. What if nobody knows who I am? What if I hate it once I change? I put thought into it here and there, over the last couple of years, but I'm always slow to take the plunge when it comes to tattoos and usernames. I have to think about them for a good long while and then think some more.

I like this name because it makes me smile. For those of you who never met me in real life, I'm physically sorta smallish, the runt in a family of large people. I was a fighter of a kid who grew up to be a fighter of a woman. I'm proud of that and I figured it was time for a little name that told my big tale.

Still the same old me though! (And I'm not going around dressed like an elf! But I do feel like this little guy so much of the time!)

On the more serious side of things, I have reached a point where I feel like I've earned the right to call myself a warrior. I have fought years of battles here and there, some brutal and some ongoing, to get to the place and the life I have now. I fucking earned it, the hardhardhard way. So while I like this name for its cheeky sort of humor, it has a kernel of intense truth to it that only a few close pals will really grok.

stuff for sale

I'm moving soon and I need to get rid of some stuff. Here's the craigslist ads for some of it. It would really help if someone wanted to just take all of it. :)

S.F. needs 49er contingency plan

The idea that Santa Clara has 100 million some-odd dollars to toss at the 49ers is weird enough. Trusting the Yorks to come up with the other $800 million needed to build takes the guts of a bomb disposal unit. And in times like these, when money is tight,...

Subscribing to comments.

If you are using Wordpress as an installed thing (versus WP.com), and you have the Subscribe To Comments plugin installed, there is a way to let people subscribe without having to comment.

  • Navigate to the folder for the theme you're using.
  • Edit comments.php.
  • Look for </form>.  Immediately after that, paste this:
    <?php show_manual_subscription_form(); ?>

If you want a bit of separation, put <hr /> just above that line.

If you want to edit the text, look for the show_manual_subscription_form() function in /wp-content/plugins/subscribe-to-comments.php.  Look for the first single-quoted item in all php _e items – that'll get you to the explainy text, the text label, and the button label.

Ta-dah!

(I should write the author and ask them to make this a proper setting.)

So many awesome things to look forward to in the near and far future.

July 18: Kip and I are having a couple of good friends over for snacks involving some of our latest CSA goodies. I intend to try and make my newly-invented and totally awesome kale quiche on a tiny scale using my mini muffin tins, and also some cucumber-yogurt dip with fresh dill from my window box and hopefully a blueberry dessert of some sort.

July 21: Paul McCartney at CitiField. He's still my favorite Beatle even though his face has melted. Probably against my better financial judgment, we have seats right on the field.

July 22: Maybe not a thing to look forward to per se, but I have a cortisone shot in the morning and a physical exam late in the afternoon, during which the doctor and I will come up with a master list of health things I need to do for my South America trip. Given that this particular doc is, in [info]offbalance's words, a "nervous Nelly" about everything, I anticipate that we will have the most comprehensive list of vaccinations possible, and this IS an exciting thing because it's preparing for Awesome Vacation of Awesome. Just like renewing my passport and buying guidebooks.

July 25: We're going up to the top of the Statue of Liberty. I've wanted to do it since I was a kid, and had planned to try to do it after I got settled in New York. Unfortunately, I was just beginning to get settled in New York in September of 2001, and it's been closed ever since. But now it's reopened, and we're paying for the privilege of hiking up a rickety, crowded, tiny staircase in what amounts to a giant metal oven, and I couldn't be more psyched!

August 6: What's better than a big rock concert you paid an arm and a leg for? A big rock concert that's free! Hall and Oates are playing a free show near Coney Island. Hell to the yeah.

August 22: My "still 29" non-birthday barbecue goes on all day at a semi-private bar in Windsor Terrace. If you will be in the area and do not have the details, let me know and I'll send you a flier (yes, there are fliers).

September 5-13: Montana, for K'Lynn's wedding. I've got the whole week there, Kip is coming later. Chances to hang with old friends, see my parents, wear a very pretty dress, and party like rock stars.

Late September sometime, I forget when exactly: U2 at Giants Stadium. I haven't been to a big rock concert in about five years (I believe Prince was my last stadium show, in mid-2004), so I guess two in one year isn't so bad.

November 18: Leaving for South America! Have already done lots more research, with lots more yet to do. (And I really have to step up the Portuguese lesson tapes. So far I have "excuse me," "do you speak/I don't speak/I speak a little English/Portuguese," "thank you," and "good morning".)

One place I am pretty certain we will not be going while in Argentina is the Lujan Zoo. I have to admit that some small secret shameful self-loathing part of me is really intrigued, but I also know that a) this is stupid and dangerous for people (has Roy taught you nothing????) and b) this is also stupid and dangerous for animals. The bear-cub swinging is especially troublesome.

Flea Control!!

My co-worker just moved in her apt with a month... and her cat has A LOT of fleas. So she got the medicine for her cat, but what can she use in her apt to get rid/kill the fleas? Any recommendations? Where to get it? Home-made remedies? Blah blah blah?

She prefers the non-poisonous kind, but any suggestions will do. (:

Does anyone how approximately how much would a professional charge for? I guess that doesn't help if I don't know the sq ft of the place.

THANKS A LOT!

Tangled up in telephone cords

Dear LJ Genie, whose desk is never messy and whose phone cord is always straight,

I have a terrible problem at work... the cord of my phone constantly tangles up and is therefore too short to be useful.

Just now I went to pick up the handset and the entire base came with it.

O Wise LJ Genie, how do I fix this problem?

(And no, cordless phones are not an option in my office)

Hand-Painted Inspirational Tees by Anna Pereira

I recently caught up with designer Anna Pereira, who creates these amazing hand-painted inspirational tees and tank tops. She’s been painting and drawing since she was a kid, and now she transforms boring white tank tops with her artistic talents. Combining airbrush, free hand painting and other techniques, she can customize these tees to a customer’s specific requests. I chatted with her to find out a little more about her work.

 Anna Pereira hand-painted tees

Tell me a little about yourself and your work. I have been making custom hand painted shirts since I can remember! I am in my mid 30’s and still going strong! My designs inspire positive ideas and have spiritual connection as well as being bright, bold, artsy and beautiful. I mainly make womens printed and painted shirts but do some mens too.

How did you get started as a designer? For as long as I can remember I have used clothing as a way to express my art and myself. So I did some stuff for myself back in school and it began! People started asking me to make things for them… I have not stopped!

Blessed Printed Shirt Tank Top Green And Purple Hand Painted

What inspires your work? Beauty, colors and spreading a positive vibe.

What are your fashion & beauty must-haves? A great pair of jeans, mascara and a sexy tank top!

What advice would you give to aspiring designers? Work hard, put out a great, well made piece and believe in your work!

Aum Tank Top - Pink and Aqua (Om AKA Pranava)

Where can people find your work? www.AnnaPereira.com and also on Etsy.com

Anything else? I just want to do my part to make the world a better place… one shirt at a time!

The Peril of Magnificent Love

If you’ve been following me on twitter, you may have noticed a few teary nights and enigmatic comments.  If I’ve been abscent here, and there, and via email, it’s because I’m fighting to fit a few precious moments in with the fella before he moves on Saturday.

G and I have had a unconventional relationship for years, but I know a few things: we very much love each other and we are very much a big part of one another’s lives.  We’re best friends, partners-in-crime, and lovers, and that’s all I could ask for.

The upcoming weeks will  be very tough– so if my posting becomes erratic or irregular, I apologize!

In the meantime, I can say this: I’m happy he’s making a move (to Denver), that will allow him to begin the healing process after the damage our time in Indiana has done to us both.  In due time, I’m hoping that I too will begin that process, whether by his side physically, or in a city that can nurture me.  The distance will be hard, and though neither of us knows the future, I think we both know it will be one that involves the other.

Additionally, I’m hoping that he and I will both be reading our copies of The Peril of Magnificent Love. It’s a fitting time to learn to love myself again.

Thank you to those who have left lovely comments, talked to me, shared with me, and been so supportive.

THERE WILL BE A DISCOUNT ARTPOST IN KANDEART_COMM ON SATURDAY AUGUST FIRST at 12 NOON CENTRAL

I had a whole post ready to be written but then I realized the whole thing was about how I was drawing last night and the various problems I ran into that led to the finished results. That kind of thing is probably not going to be super interesting without the actual pictures I drew so you could tell what I'm talking about. Durp. So that will come tomorrow at the earliest.

I got my grade for my second university class, I have maintained my 4.0 for another round. Yippee! I wrote my first paper for my current class last night, it was the fastest paper-writing ever. 45 minutes. The topic was laughably easy and it only had to be 750-1050 words. Piece of cake.

The tops of my hipbones hurt from running on Monday. Why the tops? That seems backward.

A Week In SD

Hello, all!

It's been a desire of mine to visit California, and San Diego in particular, for years now. I find myself with the opportunity to attend the San Diego ComiCon this year, and I'm putting together my itinerary.

I will be flying in Tuesday morning (21st) and flying out Monday afternoon (27th). If anyone would be so kind, I have a few questions.

The Coast- Having been born and raised in central and eastern coastal Florida, I'm used to seeing the sun rise over the ocean. Is there a nice place to see it set in San Diego? I would prefer a beachside restaurant or a place to get drinks, but I've been told that coastal SD seems to be more industrial than anything else. I don't know how true this is.

Vegetarian- Are there any vegetarian-friendly places to eat that you personally recommend? I'm used to having only one to four non-salad options wherever I go in my hometown, but I get the impression that SD has better options/diversity.

Whole Foods-  A whole week away from my kitchen means a trip to the local whole foods store. Usually before a trip, I stock up on dried fruits and nuts, as well as other healthy snacks/meals. However, I'll be flying rather than driving, so the stocking up won't occur until after I get there. Does anyone recommend a whole foods place that's priced fairly?

Sights- There's no way that I'm going to San Diego without visiting the zoo. We have a Sea World here in Orlando, so that's nothing new. Are there any aquariums, museums, events, etc that would be interesting? I know about the Rocky Horror Picture Show event.

Thanks!
